Remembering George Harrison

Remembering George Harrison

Haribol!

I’ll  try to put it down in print.

It was at Bhakitivedanta Manor in England 1993. The first Prabhupada reunion they had. So it was the first time the original devotees who went to England met up for the first time for 10 yrs. or more. Malati, Shyamasundar, Guru das, Mukunda Maharaja and alot of old Prabhupada disciples who had alot of association with Srila Prabhupada in England.

We had set up a large stage outside so everyone sat on the grass in the cow field. My service was decorating the stage to give it a more transcendental appearance. So I was a bit tired and sat at the back of all the devotees with my friend Bala Gopal to the left of me and my daughter, Sri Gandhari to the right.

Everyone was dressed in devotee garb so I noticed this person  dressed in blue jeans and blue jean jacket and looked him straight in the eye. He seemed a little scared so I thought he was a new guest. Timidly, he sat right next to Sri Gandhari. Then my friend whispers “there’s George” and a fool as I am, says out loud ” George who?”

Then Shyamasundar came and had him move over so he sat between Sri G. and George. Then Sri G. whispers that George is asking for Bala Gopal’s husband Dhanajaya. So I tell Bala thinking she would tell him because Dhanjaya was in India but she was shy. I kept trying to encourage her , thinking this way I could meet George. But she felt he wouldn’t remember her, even though she had cooked for him in those early days.

Shortly after, someone recognized him and cameras came out and this caused a disruption in the whole program. I felt sorry for him in a way because he probably just wanted to hear devotees talk about Prabhupada and this he wasn’t being allowed to do because of the attention being directed to him.

So it was arranged that only those devotees who had been around George in those early days could join him in Srila Prabhupada’s quarters.

No one had expected George to be there, he had not come to the Manor since Prabhupada had personally been there.

Now this is where it gets interesting!

I had been reading Hari Sauri’s memories book which had just recently came out. Just a couple of days before this I had come to a section where devotees in the presence of Srila Prabhupada where critisizing George saying he had fallen back into his bad habits. This stood out to me because Prabhupada responded ” George is a good boy he has Jagannatha in his bead bag”.

Now back to the next day after the reunion.

I bumped into a devotee named Tribhuvannatha who was a good friend and had been in Srila Prabhupada’s room with George. So I asked him if he spoke about Prabhupada. His reply was that very little talking took place, instead there was alot of chanting of the  Hare Krsna kirtan. Then he said, he walked him to his porsche car and he had a really worn out bead bag, and in a little pocket inside the bag were little Jagannatha deities.( I think the kind that are carved out of one piece of wood)

That just blew my mind thinking after all these years he still carried Jagannath in his bead bag and Prabhupada had known his heart.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

And as Srila Prabhupada said during the jaya om prayers at Bhaktivedanta Manor ” All glories to George Harrison.”
