One Can Keep Direct Company With the Spiritual Master/ Book Changes

One Can Keep Direct Company With the Spiritual Master
by Vyasasan das

There is an ongoing debate over the changes to Srila Prabhupada’s books. The current BBTI want you to believe they are only changing the spelling and grammatical errors, and are simply improving the books. But there is much evidence to prove otherwise. For instance in the famous verse from the Caitanya-caritamrta Madhya-Lila 19.157: “The gardener must defend the creeper by fencing it all around so that the powerful elephant of offenses may not enter.” while reading the purport to this verse from the original 1975 Edition, I couldn’t help but appreciate just how clear Srila Prabhupada’s instructions were:

“If one thinks that there are many pseudo devotees or nondevotees in the Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Society, one can keep direct company with the spiritual master, and if there is any doubt, one should consult the spiritual master.” (from purport to Original 1975 Edition)

While discussing this statement with a friend, he informed me that the BBTI had changed the purport in their re-vised edition. I couldn’t understand why they would change such a clear statement…so I looked it up in the Bhaktivedanta VedaBase…and to my great surprise they did change it!!! So much for the spelling and grammatical errors argument, no they were changing the meaning of Srila Prabhupada’s books.

Lets take a look at this example, of how the books of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanda Swami, are being changed by our so-called leaders and intellectuals. (Note the Bold Letters below is done by me to indicate the changes.)

Sri Caitanya-caritamrta (1975 Edition)

If one thinks that there are many pseudo devotees or nondevotees in the Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Society, one can keep direct company with the spiritual master, and if there is any doubt, one should consult the spiritual master. However, unless one follows the spiritual master’s instructions and the regulative principles governing chanting and hearing the holy name of the Lord, one cannot become a pure devotee. By one’s mental concoctions, one falls down. By associating with nondevotees, one breaks the regulative principles and is thereby lost.

Sri Caitanya-caritamrta (Bhaktivedanta VedaBase)

Even if one thinks that there are many pseudo devotees or nondevotees in the Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Society, still one should stick to the Society; if one thinks the Society’s members are not pure devotees, one can keep direct company with the spiritual master, and if there is any doubt, one should consult the spiritual master. However, unless one follows the spiritual master’s instructions concerning the regulative principles and chanting and hearing the holy name of the Lord, one cannot become a pure devotee. By one’s mental concoctions, one falls down. By associating with nondevotees, one breaks the regulative principles and is thereby lost.

The most important issue facing ISKCON today is the changing of Srila Prabhupada’s books. When will the devotees WAKE UP! Even the Academic World sees what is going on:

…As far as the opinion of scholars is concerned, hundreds of them praised the original works of His Divine Grace and Srila Prabhupada was very happy to hear them read aloud. However, since the program began to overhaul Srila Prabhupada’s books without his consent, the BBT has not received a single testimonial from any scholar (other than those who are devotees of ISKCON) in the last thirty years praising the changes they made to the original editions. The scholars of the world have withheld their approval of the revisions made by the BBT editors and this tells us we should have stuck with the tried and true original way the books were presented during Srila Prabhupada’s lifetime.

Let us always remember that as far as Srila Prabhupada was concerned, the books he published were “qualified to be distributed unlimitedly.” If you would have gone before Srila Prabhupada and said his books were full of mistakes, I’m sure he would have said, “You are the mistake.” (Locanananda Dasa)

No matter what, we have to preserve and distribute the original teachings of Srila Prabhupada and the main source of these teachings is Srila Prabhupada’s books. To purchase the Original books of His Divine Grace please visit; The Hare Krishna Movement

Here is a long comment, but it goes to the root of the problem, whereas ” Book Changes ” are only a symprom of the root Problem, namely disregarding the Original order of the Spiritual master to; ACT AS RITTVIK REPRESENTATIVE OF THE ACHARYA . All other problems experienced within ISKCON are rooted in the deliberate ignorance and belittling of this seminal instruction for the perpetuation of Srila Prabhupada’s movement in all ways and means.
Please therefore read through the texts patiently and use your own God given intelligence and common sense . Thank you in advance.

Here is a point to consider…

If Prabhupada could not find one disciple who was actually fit ( Qualified ) for sannyas in 1976 ( One year before his passing away ) then how did he suddenly find eleven ( 11 ) men and make them or appoint them to be GURUS ??. He dd not find any, he gave a conditional authority to act as Rittvk representative of the Acharya.

Danavirs Maharaja’s article rests on the Premise ( The premise is the problem ) that Prabhupada appointed Gurus, but there is no evidence of this, this premise it is at best an ambition held by eleven senior men, who , overcome with lust and ambition, projected themselves onto a foolish assembly of neophyte devotees who also had an ambition, to have a cheap Guru.

they wanted a discount Guru / a cheap guru,  Like a person wants a Diamond ring – cheap – from wall Mart, or K= Mart. or to get a Guru – like a person gets a pet cat or dog. In other words the disappearance of Srila Prabhupada immediately set up the conditions for the ” Cheaters and the cheated…”.

The rest is an unfortunate history. to this day ( 35 years later ) everyone icontinues to be bewildered, because everyone has some motive….some wanted to be  Guru and some wanted to get a cut rate – discount – easy going – cheap guru. actually,. It is a classic case of the cheaters and the cheated . everyone got what they wanted ( by the grace of Krsna )

At least this is how it seems to me . A classic case of the Cheater and the cheated .

So what is the solution ? tThe only solution is, to Go back to the original mistake and correct it. Surrender to the order ( Prescription ) of Prabhupada , Act as Rittvik Reapresentative of the Acharya . Simple , but difficult to do…….. So much prestige, so many followers, so much money, property etc…. , the heart if full of these things, _- wealth , woman and Prestige. Prabhupada once remarked ” Krsna Consciousness is very easy, but the determination to be Krsna Conscious is very difficult “.

My Guru Maharaja used to lament many times for this reason and he thought if one man at least had understood the principle of preaching then his mission would achieve success. In the latter days of my Guru Maharaja he was very disgusted. Actually, he left this world earlier, otherwise he would have continued to live for more years. Still he requested his disciples to form a strong Governing body for preaching the cult of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He never recommended anyone to be acharya of the Gaudiya Math. But Sridhara Maharaja is responsible for disobeying this order of Guru Maharaja, and he and others who are already dead unnecessarily thought that there must be one acharya. If Guru Maharaja could have seen someone who was qualified at that time to be acharya he would have mentioned. Because on the night before he passed away he talked of so many things, but never mentioned an acharya. His idea was acharya was not to be nominated amongst the governing body. He said openly you make a GBC and conduct the mission. So his idea was amongst the members of GBC who would come out successful and self effulgent acharya would be automatically selected. So Sridhara Maharaja and his two associate gentlemen unauthorizedly selected one acharya and later it proved a failure. The result is now everyone is claiming to be acharya even though they may be kanistha adhikari with no ability to preach. In some of the camps the acharya is being changed three times a year. Therefore we may not commit the same mistake in our ISKCON camp. Actually amongst my Godbrothers no one is qualified to become acharya. So it is better not to mix with my Godbrothers very intimately because instead of inspiring our students and disciples they may sometimes pollute them. This attempt was made previously by them, especially Madhava Maharaja and Tirtha Maharaja and Bon Maharaja but somehow or other I saved the situation. This is going on. We shall be very careful about them and not mix with them. This is my instruction to you all. They cannot help us in our movement, but they are very competent to harm our natural progress. So we must be very careful about them.

    Your ever well-wisher,
    A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

    Prabhupada’s direct order
Posted on December 10, 2011 by Gadadhara das
Bringing prior instructions given by Prabhupada to contradict a later direct order – such as the letter of July 9, 1977, the formal directive designating ritvik representatives – is crazy.
SRILA PRABHUPADA: “I may say many things to you, but when I say something directly, “Do it”, your first duty is to do that. You cannot argue, “Sir, you said me like this before.” No, that is not your duty. What I say now, you do it. That is obedience. If the captain of the ship says “Five degrees starboard” and the first mate replies, “But captain, before you told me ‘Ten degrees port’,” then it can be understood that the first mate has gone insane.” – lecture by Srila Prabhupada on the Srimad-Bhagavatam, Hyderabad, India, April 15, 1975

    Dear Hansadutta Prabhu

Please accept our respectful obeisances. All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!

It seems you took issue with our statement:

“The most important issue facing ISKCON today is the changing of Srila Prabhupada’s books.”

    I should have said:

” One of the most important issues facing our ISKCON today is the changing of Srila Prabhupada’s books.”

We agree with your assertion that; ” Book Changes ” are only a symptom of the root Problem, namely disregarding the orders of the Spiritual master. This is indeed the crux of the whole situation.

But I believe it was in a letter addressed to you, by Srila Prabhupada, where he said, “The Temples may fail, the Devotees may fail, but my books will live on” So it would seem maintaining the “Original Potency” of his books is of “utmost importance”

Dear Vyasasana, Please accept my most humble obeisances. All glories to srila Prabhupada.

The book changes, that have and are continuing to take place, are a adulteration on the person – Srila Prabhupada, It is a molestation, adulteration, literally a raping of his Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada; If someone were to touch, molest and rape your wife, or your daughter . what would you do ? Vedic injunction says one should kill such a person immediately. although It is only a mundane material transgression, yet the reaction for such offense is so severe.

As devotees, disciples of The Acharya, Srila Prabhupada, we accept him as absolute, meaning there is no difference between Srila Prabhupada His speaking, his writing , everything about Him is accepted to be as good as God- Krishna.
Therefore I find it impossible to understand how the entire leadership pf ISKCON can stand by and make no effort to check this molestation and rape of Srila Prabhupada by impudently adulterating and molesting him by in his
    Books.

I can understand that some immature ,ambitious neophyte disciples may have take this ” Book changing ” activety into their own hands, what I cannot understand is that, not a single senior ( GBC, BBT, Sannyasi, or GURU ) has come forward to protest and take appropriate action. Why ?…….silence means complicit , everyone has become implicated in this adultery.

    Dear Hansadutta Prabhu

Yes it is regretful that more senior men have not spoken up to protect the interests of Srila Prabhupada, which are in fact in their own best interest. The example is given in the Sri Caitanya-caritamrta, Madhya-lila 5.90:

“The young brāhmaṇa continued, “My dear sir, You are very merciful and You know everything. Therefore, kindly be a witness in this case. A person who knows things as they are and still does not bear witness becomes involved in sinful activities.”

Here is another Quote that you might be interested in…

“All that is needed for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing.”
